Journey to Accounting: A Passion for Numbers and a Thriving Career at Moore Markhams

Accounting attracts individuals from various backgrounds, and Katrina Hyslop's story is a testament to that. After spending over a decade in the hospitality and tourism industry, Katrina made a bold career change. She pursued her passion for numbers by entering the world of accounting. Today, she works as a full-time accountant at Moore Markhams Otago, a firm she had dreamed of joining since childhood. In an interview, Katrina shared insights into her transition to accounting, the aspects she loves about working at Moore Markhams, and her perspective on the future of the accounting profession.

A Passion for Accounting Leads to a Journey of Transformation:

Katrina's professional journey has been marked by a significant shift in career paths. After spending around 13 years in the hospitality and tourism industry, she pursued her long-standing aspiration of becoming an accountant. Katrina's passion for accounting has been the driving force behind that change.

From her high school years, she had a natural affinity for numbers. The precise nature of accounting and the satisfaction derived from balancing accounts appealed to her analytical mindset. Katrina's determination to pursue accounting remained strong, eventually leading her to the profession she loves today.

"Accounting is more than just crunching numbers; it's about unravelling the story behind the numbers and helping businesses make informed decisions," Katrina explained. She enrolled in an accounting degree program at Otago Polytech and completed her internship at Moore Markhams, a firm she had admired since her early years. Having a personal connection with the firm as her father was a client, Katrina's enthusiasm and determination led her to secure a full-time position at Moore Markhams.

The Appeal of Moore Markhams:

During the interview, Katrina explained why Moore Markhams stood out to her. The firm's pleasant work environment and open-door policy were key factors that attracted her. She emphasised the supportive nature of the directors, who were always willing to engage in conversations and understanding of personal matters that may arise. "All the directors are really lovely with the open door policy. They're more than happy to chat about things and very understanding when they know you're having issues or things happening at home," she said.

Additionally, the long tenure of many staff members at Moore Markhams Otago served as a testament to the positive work environment and culture fostered within the firm.

The Joys of the Job:

When asked about the best part of her job, Katrina highlighted the satisfaction she derives from completing tasks and overcoming challenges. While some aspects of her role may be more demanding and keep her on her toes, she finds enjoyment in the overall process of managing accounts. At the end of the day, the feeling of accomplishment, having accomplished multiple tasks and successfully overcoming obstacles, brings her a sense of fulfilment.

Transitioning to the Workplace and the Importance of Colleagues:

Katrina found the transition from studying accounting to working in the field relatively smooth. However, she acknowledged the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, as she had to adapt to remote work and learn new technologies. Despite these initial hurdles, Katrina's enthusiasm for accounting and eagerness to learn allowed her to successfully navigate the transition. "Continuous learning is absolutely essential in the field of accounting. Regulations and standards evolve. Staying updated ensures accuracy and compliance. If you want to become a trusted advisor, you must demonstrate to your clients that you can provide the most up-to-date information."

For Katrina, her colleagues play an integral role in her work experience and working collaboratively in an office setting is one of the most crucial things, as it fosters accessible communication and quick access to colleagues for guidance and support. Her positive relationships with her fellow team members create a supportive and collaborative atmosphere. The departure of a colleague is always felt, highlighting the value of strong working relationships.

Advice for Aspiring Accountants:

Reflecting on her journey, Katrina offers advice to those considering a career in accounting. She encourages individuals already studying accounting to persevere and continue their education, as the knowledge gained in the field is versatile and applicable to various business contexts. "Even if accounting is not your ultimate career path, the business acumen gained from studying accounting can prove invaluable in future endeavours. For example, when you want to run your own business."

"Another thing to look out for," she said, "is to find a learning environment which suits your learning style. I knew early on that the theory-based learning traditional universities offer wasn't for me. The Polytechnic has been fantastic for me, as it combines theory with practical skills."
