Michael Rania

Audit Partner

Wairarapa Wellington

Michael offers the breadth and depth of 25 years of assurance experience covering a range of clients in the not for profit, public and commercial sectors.  He provides audit, assurance, and advisory services with a focus on small and medium entities (SMEs).  Michael takes the time to get alongside clients, to understand their business and risk, and offer practical solutions to ensure compliant and useful financial reports, as well as providing risk management advice.  He helps clients navigate the complexities of:

  • International Financial Reporting Standards (NZ IFRS)
  • Transitioning to the External Reporting Board (XRB) new financial reporting framework for public benefit entities (PBEs) and for-profits
  • Developing and implementing service performance reporting frameworks for PBEs to articulate their performance story (annual statement of service performance).

Michael provides specialist consulting services to management and boards on all aspects of service performance reporting.

At Moore Stephens Wellington Audit since 2015, Michael has been joined by the large majority of his clients and a handful of audit specialist staff from large chartered accountancy firm BDO, where Michael worked since 1992, and was a partner. His time at BDO included a secondment to their London office.

Earlier in his career Michael had developed public sector audit experience with Audit NZ and Business Advisory experience with the predecessor firm to Ernst Young in Wellington and London.

Michael has spent six years on several boards in finance roles. He therefore brings assurance experience and understanding to his engagements from a governance perspective.
