Client Profile: Animal Medical Centre

Moore Markhams

Nestled in the heart of Johnsonville, Northern Wellington, Animal Medical Centre has been a haven for pets and their owners for 19 years. Proudly independently owned, this veterinary practice embodies the belief that "pets are a beloved part of our lives."

Under the capable management of Antoinette Benfell, Practice Manager & Owner, together with partner Mike Benfell, Senior Vet and Practice Owner, the centre is more than just a clinic; it’s a nurturing space where animals and humans alike feel cared for.

Antoinette’s Vision for Animal Care

Antoinette’s vision is simple yet profound: to provide the very best care for your best friend. Simultaneously, she is deeply committed to giving back to the community, investing time and resources into local initiatives that reflect her passion for animals. This spirit of community engagement is what makes the Animal Medical Centre a cherished part of local life.

A Partnership Built on Trust

For the past 1.5 years, Antoinette has been collaborating with Bruce Stormer, Business Advisory Director at Moore Markhams Wellington. She describes him as “always on the end of the phone, offering great support and advice whenever we need it.”

Bruce has quickly become more than just an advisor; he’s a trusted partner in navigating the complexities of running a successful veterinary practice. Antoinette adds, “It feels like I’m talking to a friend who just happens to know a lot about finance!” This warm, personable connection has made all the difference in her approach to business and growth. “Bruce has been instrumental in streamlining our business’ tax compliance and identifying operating efficiencies. However, we have plans to expand our service offering and Bruce is assisting us in developing sustainable business models and ensuring our services are cost-effective,” she adds.

Exciting Changes on the Horizon

In order to fuel this growth, exciting changes are on the horizon for the Animal Medical Centre. Antoinette and her team are gearing up to move to new premises, and this transition represents a significant operational change. “This move is a chance for us to expand and better serve our clients and their pets,” she explains. “We want to create a space where every pet feels right at home. But it won’t be without its challenges. With business growth also come larger demands on administrative teams, payroll and tax. Having Bruce and the wider team of Moore Markhams available at the end of the phone is the secret ingredient we need to make this next step with confidence Antoinette adds.

The Moore Markhams Wellington team are experienced business advisors, able to guide businesses through rapid growth stages efficiently with a full range of tax, accounting and advisory services.

Earlier in the year, the government introduced changes to legislation for pet owners, making it easier for pet owners to rent accommodation. Antoinette hopes the regulation will see more pets out of shelters and into warm and loving homes. “Pets have a wonderful impact on people’s mental health and wellbeing, but we also need to remember the duty of care we have towards our pets. Seeing more pets in homes will hopefully mean we’ll see more pets coming into the practice for regular check-ups and preventative treatment. As our practice gets busier, I can’t wait to see our community expand and grow.”

Her care and enthusiasm is infectious and without a doubt, Antoinette is eager to continue her journey to establish Animal Medical Centre as a community hub for pet care. With the expert assistance of Bruce and the team (and plenty of furry snuggle), we’re sure that every pet will receive the love and care they deserve.
