Under the guidance of registered landscape architect Hugh Forsyth, Biostream has emerged as a trailblazer in environmental innovation, in partnership with Waterclean NZ. The company specialises in Floating Treatment Wetland systems, offering self-sustaining, eco-friendly solutions for diverse stormwater and wastewater challenges.
Restoring Balance to Waterways
Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTWs) use floating pontoons made from recycled PET, supporting hydroponically grown native plant species. These systems treat the water column through natural bioremediation processes, involving both aerobic and anaerobic activity to capture, break down and transform organic matter, contaminants and nutrients, and maintain healthy oxygen levels in the water body.
FTWs improve water clarity and remove contaminants through the roots and biofilm extending below the floating structures. They are effective at remediating total nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and sediment, capturing up to 90% of suspended solids. Clients typically see positive outcomes within 3 to 6 months, with significant water clarity improvements occurring within 12 months—provided there is sufficient water flow.
Floating Treatment Wetlands offer a highly flexible and scalable solution for water treatment across various environments. Proven to remove sediments, trace elements, and nutrients, these systems are designed and manufactured to withstand local conditions. As a leader in FTW technology, Biostream has implemented these solutions for local governments, commercial developments, public spaces, and residential projects.
“Compared to alternative treatment methods for similar site conditions, FTWs typically cost 50% less while maintaining minimal operating expenses over their 20+ year lifespan. These installations not only extend the longevity of existing infrastructure but also provide us with a sustainable, innovative edge in new developments—often receiving strong approval from the public and key stakeholders”, says Hugh.
