Moving with the market is one of the key strengths that Greg Jolliffe, co-owner and manager of The Colour Centre Masterton, believes sets his business apart. It was behind the decision to take on the Colourplus franchise that broadened the focus from just paint and wallpaper to now providing a full decorating service.

“We recognised that increasingly customers do not just want to simply purchase a product; they need a ‘you do it for me’ service as well,” says Greg. “So our service can be as full as customers want – from advice on colours and interior design, through to making and installation of drapes and blinds, to organising waterblasting of a roof prior to painting.”

Being locally owned and operated by the same family for 34 years is another strength in Greg’s view. “Customers have plenty of choice but what sets us apart from all the others is that we know everyone who comes to the shop and we treat them well. It is natural for us to provide good service to people whom we know and like.

“Our customers can trust us to do what we say we will, and that our products can be trusted too.” That Colour Centre provides a 15 year guarantee on its paints is evidence the business ‘walks the talk’.

The Colour Centre was established by Jim Jolliffe in 1976 to provide paint and wallpaper for the homes built by his other business, Wairarapa Homes. When Jim retired in 1998, Greg took over as Colour Centre manager and in 2002 joined the ColourPlus franchise, part of a 40-strong network of stores New Zealand-wide.

Two years ago, Greg, his brother Michael, and sister, Melanie purchased the business. Melanie heads up the soft furnishing division specialising in blinds, curtains and drapes. Michael handles all installations required and any project management contracts for domestic exterior projects.

The Colour Centre’s relationship with Markhams accountant and business advisor, David Macklin dates back to its inception. David joined Markhams in 1976 and Jim Jolliffe’s Colour Centre was one of his first clients. Today he continues his accounting role with Greg, Michael and Melanie, producing annual accounts, GST returns and taxation services.
