Living in scenic Queenstown allows Ron Mackersy to enjoy the best of both worlds.  As well as his position as a senior partner at law firm Mitchell Mackersy Lawyers, he enjoys mountain biking along one of the many popular trails as well as getting behind the wheel of his race-ready Honda Civic Type R at Highlands Motor Sport Park in Cromwell.

Ron, who has over 40 years’ experience in commercial and general law, originally operated the law firm, which also had branches in Christchurch and Queenstown, from Dunedin.

Then in 2010 and 2014, Mitchell Mackersy sold off its general legal practices in Dunedin and Christchurch, and Ron and Christchurch partner, Tess Wethey, moved to Queenstown to consolidate Mitchell Mackersy’s practice there.

“It’s a wonderful place to live and it was a good move to expand the areas that we specialise in.  To try and compete at a general law level these days is quite difficult.  You really have to have an area of specialisation, so that’s what we do.”

Mitchell Mackersy describes itself as a “proudly small and dynamic team” of fourteen – made up of two partners, two solicitors and ten administrative staff.

Their clients are nationwide and include property owners, investors, developers, and contractors, together with a wide range of individuals and small to medium size businesses.

Mitchell Mackersy has been involved in more than 80 commercial property syndicates throughout New Zealand over the past 20 years.

The firm sources commercial property investment opportunities for private investors, negotiates and secures suitable properties with long-term leases in place that meet strict investment criteria, and completes the necessary legal and commercial due diligence.

“There are many elements involved in putting each group or project together, including the property and the people. It is very rewarding work,” says Ron.

These property syndicates are structured to provide investors with a high yielding and tax effective investment in New Zealand’s top quality real estate, without the burdens of private ownership.  Investors must meet strict qualifying criteria to take part.

Being located in Queenstown means Mitchell Mackersy is well positioned to take advantage of the burgeoning range of developments, large and small, taking place in this popular destination.  “In terms of New Zealand regions that are expanding, Queenstown is one of the stars at the moment,” says Ron.

As well, the firm is involved in many commercial property developments as part of the rebuild of Christchurch following the devastating earthquakes there in 2010 and 2011.

Mitchell Mackersy has been working with Markhams Clarke Craw for over 40 years and this long-term association means the accountancy team has a vital understanding of the business.

As Ron puts it, “From an accounting perspective we need someone who does the financials for each of the properties being developed.  We have 80 to 90 properties that are under management and each of those is a separate company and has to have a set of accountancy books every year.

“Therefore, we need someone that understands each of those properties; they have to have a thorough knowledge of all the taxation issues and everything around that particular type of business. In that sense, Markhams Clarke Craw has grown up with us in terms of the nature of the business that we do.”
