Hayden and Sarah Gibson are the owners of Mitre 10 MEGA Wanganui.

“Sometimes you have to spend money to make money and having the right people giving you the right advice, especially when it comes to finance and business advice, makes being successful a lot easier,” says Mitre 10 MEGA Wanganui owner, Hayden Gibson.

Hayden, who has been working alongside the company since December 1995, purchased the Wanganui branch with his wife Sarah, last year in April.

Hayden enjoys being busy and spending time on the floor working alongside his 89 employees as well as helping and giving his customers the best advice when it comes to the home, garden or other household DIY projects.

“Mitre 10 MEGA is a great New Zealand brand and being 100 percent locally owned is important to us. Our team is passionate about what they do and they take pride in exceeding customer expectations. Retail is about relationships and not just getting the sale; if we can make life long relationships then there are a few sales that come with that.

“Mitre 10 MEGA Wanganui places a strong focus on staff training. The company is committed to providing inspiration, advice, tools and materials customers need to complete projects or make changes around the house,” says Hayden.

Hayden says when it comes to running a branch of one of the country’s biggest home improvement stores you can guarantee that no day is the same.

For Hayden and Sarah spending time with their two children is just as important as meeting their customer’s needs or upholding the brand which has been trusted and known by Kiwis for more than 40 years.

“As we have two young children, Sarah’s role in the business is based around school hours, so she gets the job of running the kids around, which at times is possibly harder than running a business. I also coach my son’s rugby team to ensure we get some valuable time with each other.”
However, sometimes you have to mix the two especially in the first years of running a business, admits Hayden. “We have just returned from a family holiday in the South Island where we visited six Mitre 10 MEGA branches and a Mitre 10 store, and sometimes that’s as balanced as life gets.”

As well as balancing family and work life, Hayden and Sarah also place a lot of importance in giving back to the tight knit Wanganui community.

“We try to assist with as many events as possible as it is our way of thanking the Wanganui community for supporting us.”

An example is the local and regional tough kid event, which is open to all primary and intermediate school aged children. Another is the local hospice. “Without the help of Hospice Wanganui, our Ladies Night never would have been successful. Together with the community, Mitre 10 MEGA Wanganui has been able to raise more than $30,000 for the hospice in the last four years.”

Hayden and Sarah, who are celebrating their first year as owners, approached James Bowen of Moore Stephens Markhams Wanganui because of his vast experience in the accountancy business.

“James Bowen is a friend who has supported us with our business and has continually assured us that nothing is too difficult. He’s been very helpful when it comes to business and financial advice. The relationships he has with the banks and other financial organisations are invaluable, which has made running our business a lot smoother,” says Hayden.
