Phillips Associates: Shaping New Zealand’s Urban Landscape

Moore Markhams

For over two decades, Phillips Associates have been at the forefront of New Zealand’s architectural and urban design landscape. The directors of Phillips Associates bring a deep passion for sustainable and thoughtful design, backed by experience working across New Zealand, Europe, and the United States.

From large-scale master-planned communities to high-density residential developments, Phillips Associates has played a crucial role in shaping modern New Zealand. But the journey of running an architecture and design practice is complex—especially in an evolving market. Through their long-standing partnership with Moore Markhams, the Phillips Associates team have been able to navigate business challenges, ensuring their firm remains resilient and positioned for future growth.

Building a Business on Strong Foundations

Founding director Dan Phillip’s journey into architecture was anything but conventional. After completing his studies in New Zealand, he was accepted into the prestigious University of Notre Dame, where he specialised in Urban Design and Classical Architecture. This experience cemented his interest in designing built environments that are not just functional but also deeply connected to local heritage and urban needs.

Upon returning to New Zealand, Dan saw an opportunity to bring these principles into commercial and residential architecture. In 2005, he took the leap and launched his own practice, working closely with developers on a variety of high-profile projects. One of his most notable projects includes the SugarTree Apartments, a multi-stage, mixed-use development in central Auckland, comprising over 800 apartments and retail spaces. This project, and many others like it, demonstrated Phillips Associates’ ability to take on complex urban developments while maintaining a human-centred approach to design.

Ervin Alite also became a director of Phillips Associates in 2020 after being a senior figure in the firm for some years prior. Ervin's international architecture experience, together with his immense design ability and Revit computer skills, have elevated Phillips Associates to the forefront of their architectural and urban design field. Ervin leads many of the large scale projects at Phillips Associates.

However, like many businesses in the built environment sector, Phillips Associates has had to navigate economic fluctuations. “When the GFC of 2009 happened, we were forced to reassess our structure, streamlining operations while maintaining the ability to take on major projects”, said Dan.

Phillips Associates adapted by forming strategic partnerships, including a long-standing collaboration with a Dunedin-based drafting firm, allowing Phillips Associates to scale up or down as needed without taking on excessive overhead costs.

This flexibility has been key to the firm’s longevity—allowing them to remain agile in a highly cyclical industry.

Navigating Challenges with Moore Markhams

A successful architecture firm requires more than just creative vision—it demands strong financial and business management. That’s where Moore Markhams comes in.

Phillips Associates relationship with Moore Markhams began in 2015, when the firm acquired his previous accountant’s practice. Initially, he was concerned that working with a larger firm would mean higher costs and a more impersonal approach. However, those concerns quickly disappeared.

“I was worried we’d get lost in the system, but it’s been the complete opposite. Jess Gilmour has been a great support, providing practical business advice, helping us navigate GST, yearly accounts, and even structuring our business for long-term success,” Dan explains.

Unlike many accounting firms that take a purely transactional approach, Moore Markhams has been proactive in providing strategic guidance. Jess has worked closely with Phillips Associates to ensure they remain financially resilient—especially in today’s difficult economic climate.

With the architecture and construction industry facing major headwinds, including rising material costs and economic uncertainty, having a strong advisory team has been crucial. Moore Markhams has helped Dan and his business partner and fellow director, Ervin Alite, manage cash flow, forecast for the future, and structure their business agreements more effectively.

“Jess doesn’t just wait for us to call—she checks in, provides valuable insights, and makes sure we’re on track. That’s the kind of support you need in business.”

Looking Ahead: A Focus on Growth and Resilience

Dan and Ervin acknowledge that while the current economic climate is tough, businesses that can adapt and stay agile will ultimately emerge stronger. Having weathered previous downturns, Phillips Associates is confident that their experience, combined with the right strategic partners, will allow them to continue delivering high-impact projects for years to come.

“At the end of the day, resilience is key. If you can survive the tough times, you come out the other side even stronger. That’s the plan—and we’re excited for what’s next.”

With a clear vision, a strong team, and the backing of Moore Markhams, Phillips Associates is well-positioned to continue shaping New Zealand’s architectural future—one project at a time.
