Accounting team growing from strength to strength

Moore Markhams Queenstown was established three years ago with a team of two. Now the team equals five to meet the growing demands of an increasing number of business clients.

Led by director Heath Copland and senior manager Ryan Hammer, the Queenstown team recently moved to an office space in a new healthcare precinct development at Lake Hayes Estate. Now there’s plenty of room to accommodate the increased staff number.

An Arrowtown Ward Councillor on the Queenstown Lakes District Council, Heath says he’s proud to see that despite the disruption that Covid-19 has caused, the region is holding its own and growing in certain sectors, including his own business.

“Our growth has been organic, we’re not touting for business, rather it’s coming from referrals and clients that are growing.”

Harry Riddell is no stranger to Moore Markhams having transferred from the Dunedin office to Queenstown recently. He says it’s great to have a change but to stay within the fold. Harry joined as an intern out of high school six years ago and worked with the Dunedin team while he completed a BCom majoring in Accounting and Finance at Otago University. He’s now working on completing his Chartered Accountant qualification.

Mandy Xie is enjoying working with new clients in different industries to those of her previous local accounting firm. She says the technical side of taxation and compliance is consistent but the application of her knowledge to different sectors is keeping things stimulating for her. She’s enjoying the extended team as well.

Lara Papi joined the team in February and is likely to be the first person clients will see or hear when they phone or call in. Previously working in admin at Wakatipu High School, Lara is supporting the team with admin, keeping the processes and information flow smooth. She’s looking forward to developing relationships with clients over the coming months.

Ryan Hammer says that initially the Queenstown office was a ‘satellite’ of the Dunedin firm but that is not the case any longer. Relationships have been critical to the office’s growth; he and Heath have worked on developing strong networks in the region’s commercial world, including the local Chamber of Commerce. He says they had been keeping an eye out for the right staff for a while.
