Dominion Constructors Ltd

Rapport builds strong business foundation

With a track record of award-winning and high profile construction projects, it’s evident that Dominion Constructors is a building company with fortitude.

Achievements include main contracts for Mainfreight Otahuhu, Giltrap Prestige and prestigious apartment developments like Eleven Mt Maunganui and Heron Point, as well as subcontract work that includes concrete structures for Sky City Hotel, Casino and Tower and Eden Park Redevelopment. Then there’s civil works at Manukau Rail Link and Dart1 Newmarket.

Since 1973, the firm has confidently completed civil, commercial, industrial, infrastructure and residential projects in Auckland, Coromandel and north of Auckland. Dominion Constructors essentially provides subcontractor services to larger construction companies, and is the main contractor for projects up to $50 million. With 150 staff, the firm is regarded as one of largest employers of the mid-level construction industry businesses, illustrating that its strength truly comes from within.

“Our construction success is defined in terms of ‘quality, on time and on budget’. The company’s success lies in its ability to attract and retain quality, experienced personnel. Our people are our best asset,” Joint Managing Director, Brett Russell proudly states.

The size and expertise of Dominion Constructors ensures a large percentage of the work is completed in-house, giving a greater control over the quality of the project and the ability to drive performance requirements.

With marketing conducted mainly through relationships, Dominion Constructors is well known in Auckland. “We value the personal approach, specifically building strong ongoing relationships with clients. Repeat business comes from fundamental relationships, built up over time and trust.

“Although a number of our projects are negotiated, the market is currently favouring the tender process with projects gained via tenders that are price orientated and attribute weighted. Whilst the market is tight, our track record and experience in offering complete solutions generally stands us in good stead,” says Brett.

In 1999, Dominion Constructors was one of the first construction firms to gain NZS 4801 certification for their Occupational Health and Safety Management system. Our ‘Safety First’ philosophy not only aims for compliance, it also provides a proactive, preventative approach. All our building staff are Site Safe qualified,” confirms Brett.

Continuing their commitment to a rigorous safety culture, the firm has held ISO9001 certification for over 10 years recently upgrading this certification to ISO9001/2008. The in-house Quality Assurance Manager regularly undertakes internal audits ensuring work is completed to the expected high standards. “Quality Assurance systems are embedded into everything we do and we are proud of our record of high quality projects, staff and systems” says Brett.

Earlier this year, Dominion Constructors became a Markhams client when long-time accountant, John Teague joined Markhams Auckland as a partner. John and his team assist with audits, tax compliance and general accounting requirements for Dominion Constructors and other companies in the Russell Group including Russell Bricklaying, and Masonry Concepts. John also works with the Russell family on trusts and personal requirements.

“We like the complete service Markhams provides. It’s reassuring to know that our finances are well managed and we know exactly how the business is going. A Markhams staff member is part of our team, joining us in the office every month to complete the senior management payroll,” says Brett.
