Crown Flooring Ltd

Cloud based technology covered for this expanding Auckland business

Adrian de Roode began his career in flooring in the 1970s, working for his father Albert out of the family home’s basement. The company began its life as a flooring installation business Albert de Roode Ltd, but as it grew, Albert and Adrian moved into flooring supplies.

In 1983, the business become known as Crown Flooring Ltd, and a shop was opened in New Lynn. Fast forward to 2017, and Crown Flooring now has three stores across Auckland.

“Our business had always been focused on commercial jobs, accounting for around 80 percent of our work. In 2012, we joined buying group Flooring Xtra and opened stores in Henderson and Mt Eden,” says Adrian.

Crown Flooring has its head office in New Lynn where the installation work is also run from. The building has large storage facilities with a massive cutting area. Its core business is floor coverings, specifically carpet and vinyl. Crown’s customer list is still varied and includes the Royal New Zealand Navy, hospitals and prisons.

“We used to do a lot of shipping jobs, fitting out cruise liners for P&O and the Holland America line. I’d take a crew with me and we’d spend about a month in Singapore doing the work. We also fitted out the Aratere ferry – that job was done in Spain. While we do still work on shipping projects, they are closer to home now.”

When his father Albert passed away in 2003, Adrian took over the role of managing director, responsible for the 75 waged and contracted staff, as well as the financial management of the company.

“Moore Stephens Markhams has been involved in our business for a long time. Dad used firm director Dennis Munn as his accountant, and when I took over the business, Dennis put director Kiran Bhikha in charge. Kiran’s great – he’s young and understands our business.”

Adrian says the relationship with Kiran and Moore Stephens Markhams has “really taken off”. “It’s really good. He’s more of a consultant and advisor than purely an accountant.”

Up until Adrian took over the reins, Crown Flooring had used manual processes and an early version of MYOB to manage its finances. “We are in the process of tying the financial functions of the three stores together as manual systems are no longer effective. Cloud based systems are excellent, so we have embraced technology and are about to implement the latest MYOB software.

“Kiran gives us advice and he is very suited to our business. I use him as a sounding board and most decisions about the future I talk through with him first. He helps point me in the right direction – after all, he’s got a lot of experience dealing with other companies and businesses to draw on.

“We’re moving forward with the intention of opening another store and along with Kiran’s prompting and assistance, our business will continue to evolve as we step into the next stage of growth.”
